In-canon, I think that Draco found out during his sixth year that he wasn't as bad as he thought he was. Something about being ordered to kill a defenseless old man who'd always been good (or
at least decent) to him just didn't set well.
And Luna...is Luna. I admit freely to having a big soft spot for her.
