Well, I'm fully interested--well done, so far.
Is it too late to ask for that muffin recipe? I'm willing to barter with one for either zucchini cobbler or bread.

I am greatly enjoying this story. The worldbuilding, the action, the characters, all of these elements keep me coming back to your works.
The only problem I see with this chapter is that you are going overboard with explanation of your metaphors. It's as if instead of saying "the sea of unfamiliar faces swirled around him, carrying him towards the square", you'd write "The unfamiliar faces around him were like waves of the sea. The waves carry a piece of wood without any consern for it, and all the water looks the same to the wood, and so the strangers around him pushed him along, without any consern for him as a person". Do you see what I am trying to say with these two examples?
In this case, if you never mentioned the word "authors", and simply talked about Chroniclers, whose writings define the worlds they describe, and how the more experienced ones object to younger ones tampering with their work, it would still be completely obvious what you are talking about, but would sound more natural than the characters of your work explaining all your metaphors for the reader.
Anne B. Walsh replied:
Your point is taken, but I've been dealing with a lot of readers who are grumpy about not understanding, so I may have overexplained a bit. Apologies.

Love. Absolutely love it. I really enjoyed you referring to your own words on DV in the story. I haven't had time to sit and read until now, so I get the first 5 in one go, and isn't that just the best way to read it?
I can't wait to see where else this goes Anne. I am so glad that you were able to transition into being a full-time writer. If I had that courage, I'd be onstage all the time. Go girl!
Anne B. Walsh replied:
Oh, that's not the last time I'll be quoted (or show up) in this one. As for courage... work a crap job for a while, save up all the money you can, accept that it may still take a long time, and then GO. Do it now, while there's nobody depending on you but you!

Wow, this new story is really cool. I wasn't sure where you were going with it from the first 2 chapters, but the 3rd and 4th started pulling it together for me. You are extremely creative and I think this story will really go places. I am also anxiously awaiting Surpassing Danger. I don't do Facebook but I am still one of your biggest fans and will keep on reading! I hope you read these comments for those of us who do not Facebook- I am probably going to break down and join it one day... Erika
Anne B. Walsh replied:
I'm so glad you like it! Yes, the first and second chapters were necessarily a bit mysterious, but that's about as far as I think I can get anyone to go without explanation. SD is building in the back of the mind so don't give up! I do also have a blog, if you're looking for more news of me... it's called "Writing Outside the Cube" and I'm going to write a new entry as soon as I post Chapter 5 here...

Anne B. Walsh replied:
It's people like you who alternately thrill and terrify me. Muffin recipe will be sent.

thanks for updating!!
Anne B. Walsh replied:
Let it ripen. If it's a good story, it'll get better with time, not worse.

Ooh, I like where this is going! I completely agree with you that *really good* fanfiction gets a bad rap and is grouped unfairly with the loads of trash that are out there. And who is this pretzel girl?
Anne B. Walsh replied:
And in this universe, by definition, if it's not good, it's not powerful. The pretzel girl is a new character, a Legendbreaker from another 'verse (actually an original story of mine) and one of Neenie and Fox's neighbors. More about her next time!

Your story is growing ... I now understand better how it all came to be as it is, and have a glimpse of where it's going. I look forward to seeing it all fleshed out!

More on the way!

Wow.. This is striking me as a logical outbreak from Heinlein's Multiverse. As the song sezs Loving every miniute of it.

Anne B. Walsh replied:
Don't think I've run across it in Heinlein, though I have read quite a bit of him. I was thinking more along the lines of Diana Wynne Jones, though with my own spin, of course.

I moved to London gently and have found that they call them corgettes not zucchinis here.
...but that is my only picky.
Definitely investing, want to know more.
Anne B. Walsh replied:
Thanks for the pick! Fixed in chapter!

OMG. If you do something, you go all the way, don't you? I love it. During my reading of the first chapter, I was basically very confused, but when reading the following chapters... Well, wow. And I suppose you sometimes think of DV as something that got out off control, right? ;) So HP is het ridge, as they say, and DV would be the tell of HP. Did I get that right?
Anyway, I'm VERY interested in all your new ideas, so keep writing them down! Oh, and make sure that when you are published, the nice people in Europe (and in my case, especially Belgium) are able to buy your books ;)
Good luck!
Anne B. Walsh replied:
Oh, DV absolutely got out of control and took over my life, but I'm loving it all the same! You got the terms exactly right -- nicely done! I shall make sure to put the books on sites where Euro-types can buy them, so no worries!

Ooh, nice chapter. I liked the explanation of the Legendbreakers universe. Very well done.
And I like mysterious pretzel girl. Especially her entrance. That's the sort of randomness I appreciate. :D
More soon, please!
Anne B. Walsh replied:
Mysterious pretzel girl gets a name next chapter, and some reasoning behind her lust!
